Why Investing in Custom WordPress Themes Is Beneficial
Establishing a unique and professional online presence is essential for businesses and individuals in the current digital landscape. WordPress stands out for its flexibility and user-friendly interface when building a website. One of the key decisions you need to make when setting up a WordPress site is whether to use a premade theme or invest in a custom WordPress theme. This article explores why custom WordPress themes are worth the investment and how they can benefit your online presence.
Introduction to WordPress Themes
What Are WordPress Themes? WordPress themes are pre-designed templates that determine the look and functionality of your website. They control everything from the layout to the color scheme and typography, making them a critical aspect of your site's design.
Types of WordPress Themes: Free and Premium are two primary types of WordPress themes. Free themes are available at no cost and offer basic design and functionality, while premium themes come with more advanced features and support, typically at a price. However, both free and premium themes are often not tailored to meet the specific needs of your business.
The Drawbacks of Pre-Made Themes
Limited Customization Pre-made themes can be limiting in terms of customization. While they may look great out of the box, making significant changes to suit your brand can be challenging without extensive coding knowledge.
Performance Issues Pre-made themes frequently include unnecessary features and functionalities, resulting in bloated code. This can slow down your site, negatively impacting user experience and SEO rankings.
Security Concerns Pre-made themes are widely used, making them more susceptible to security vulnerabilities. Hackers often target common themes, increasing the risk of your website being compromised.
Benefits of Custom WordPress Themes
Unique Design A custom WordPress theme is designed specifically for your brand, ensuring that your website stands out from the competition. It allows for a unique design that aligns with your brand identity, making a lasting impression on your visitors.
Tailored Functionality A custom theme provides features and functionalities designed specifically for your requirements. This ensures that your website performs exactly how you want it to, providing a seamless user experience.
Improved Performance Custom themes are built with clean, optimized code, which improves your website's performance. Faster loading times lead to better user engagement and higher search engine rankings.
Enhanced Security Since custom themes are unique to your site, they are less likely to be targeted by hackers. Additionally, custom themes can be built with the latest security practices in mind, providing an extra layer of protection for your website.
The Investment in Custom WordPress Themes
Cost Considerations Investing in a custom WordPress theme can be more expensive upfront compared to purchasing a premium theme. Despite higher initial costs, the long-term benefits like improved performance and security make the investment worthwhile.
Finding the Right Developer To get the most out of a custom WordPress theme, it's essential to hire a skilled developer who understands your needs and can deliver a high-quality product. Seek out developers with strong portfolios and positive client reviews.
Real-World Examples of Custom Themes
Case Study 1: E-Commerce Website An online store invested in a custom WordPress theme to provide a unique shopping experience. The custom theme included tailored product pages, seamless checkout processes, and advanced search functionality, resulting in increased sales and customer satisfaction.
Case Study 2: Corporate Website A corporate website needed a professional and modern look to attract potential clients. The custom WordPress theme was designed with the company's branding in mind, featuring a sleek layout and interactive elements that enhanced the user experience.
How to Get Started with Custom WordPress Themes
Define Your Requirements Before contacting a developer, clearly outline your website's requirements. Consider the design elements, functionalities, and user experience you want to achieve.
Budget Planning Determine your budget for the custom theme project. Keep in mind that while custom themes can be more expensive, they offer significant long-term benefits.
Choosing a Developer Research and choose a developer who has experience creating custom WordPress themes. Look at their previous work and ensure they understand your vision and goals.
Collaborating with Your Developer Work closely with your developer throughout the design and development process. Provide feedback and make sure the final product meets your expectations.
Conclusion
Investing in a custom WordPress theme is a smart decision for anyone looking to create a unique and professional online presence. While the initial cost may be higher than using a pre-made theme, the long-term benefits of improved performance, security, and user experience make it worthwhile. By working with a skilled developer, you can create a website that truly represents your brand and meets your specific needs.
FAQs
1. What is the main advantage of a custom WordPress theme over a pre-made one? The main advantage is the ability to have a unique design and tailored functionality that perfectly fits your brand and business needs.
2. Are custom WordPress themes more secure than pre-made themes? Yes, custom themes are generally more secure because they are less likely to be targeted by hackers and can be built with the latest security practices.
3. How much does a custom WordPress theme cost? The price of a custom WordPress theme depends greatly on the complexity of the design and required functionality. It's important to discuss your budget with your developer.
4. Can I update a custom WordPress theme myself? Yes, with proper documentation and guidance from your developer, you can manage and update your custom theme. However, major changes may require the assistance of a developer. 5. How long does it take to develop a custom WordPress theme? The development time can vary based on the complexity of the project. Finding Ourselves
Discovering identity and individuality as a member of a system
As headmates, it can often be challenging for many of us to understand who we are as individuals, our own system aside. For some headmates, lacking a clear sense of self can be disorienting and frustrating. For created headmates, and those of us who struggle with dissociation, not knowing who we are can sometimes cause us to question if we even exist. We get asked a lot on this blog how headmates can try to become more individual or distinct, and in this post we’re aiming to help answer that!
A little disclaimer before we get started: we are just one DID system talking about our experiences and trying to offer advice. Not everything we say will be useful for every system! You know yourself and your system more than we ever could, so please use your own discretion when it comes to following advice we give here, or anywhere else on our blog. Also, not every headmate needs or wants to be unique and distinct, and that’s okay! This post is more for those who are trying to gain some sort of individuality, which isn’t necessary for every headmate in every system.
One more thing: our goal with this post is not to cause strife and division between headmates. We aren’t advocating for strengthened dissociative barriers, nor are we attempting to cause arguments or disagreements in other systems. Please know, however, that as system members grow more distinct in their differences, arguments and disagreements may certainly arise! We’d encourage everyone to do their best to treat each other with kindness and respect as they grow more unique and start diverging from the rest of their system a bit.
Okay, so when it comes to finding your own unique individuality as a headmate, here are some things you can try to help make yourself a bit more distinct!
Take Your Time
A vast roster of full-fledged differences between headmates likely isn’t going to appear overnight! As you and your system undergo this process, try to have some patience with yourself and each other. It may take a few months for differences to really stick or new habits to form, and that’s okay! As you try to learn more about making yourself distinct, it’ll probably be best to take things at your own pace and don’t try to rush anything.
Self-Reflection
Spend some time thinking about yourself, your goals, and your relationships with your headmates. Why do you want to be more different from the rest of your system? If you try to envision your ideal self, what do you see? Is there anything that’s drawn your attention in the past, but you weren’t able to fully explore for some reason? How would you describe yourself now, as you are? How would your headmates describe you? Ask yourself these questions and more as you think about what you’re like, and how you might like to change in the future. As you change, remember to periodically come back to self-reflection; check in with yourself and make sure that the changes you’re making are accurately reflecting the person or part you want to become!
Journalling
Having your own space to get your thoughts out separate from the rest of your system can have a ton of benefits - not just for creating individuality but also for providing yourself some personal autonomy! Your journal can be a physical notebook, a Google Doc or other digital note, a blog on Tumblr or WordPress, or anything else. Having your own space can really help you learn more about yourself as you are, the rest of your system aside. In your journal you can create a list of goals and keep track of your progress as you aim to become more distinct!
Ask Games
Ask games can be a fun and more casual way to solidify differences and learn more about what makes you unique! Sometimes having a list of specific, pointed questions can help headmates find direction when it comes to figuring out who they are. The tags “#system ask game” and “#plural ask game” here on Tumblr have some great lists of questions created by fellow systems! Keep in mind that you don’t have to wait for someone to send an ask in order to answer the questions of an ask game - any member of your system can fill in the whole list whenever they like!
Make Conscious Choices
As you live your lives, try to start thinking about the choices you make. Do you choose things out of habit, because it’s what’s expected of you, or because it’s truly what you want? Know that it’s okay to make choices that more or less align with the rest of your system! You don’t have to feel bad or ashamed about any similarities you have with your headmates. Still, if you are actively trying to differentiate yourself, questioning or thinking critically about your decisions may help you start making choices that align more with who you are or want to become.
Try New Things!
Now the meat of our post, the most important thing we believe a system member can do to actually forge their own identity and set them apart as an individual from the rest of their headmates - trying new things! Stepping out of your comfort zone, experimenting with something you hadn’t considered before, learning a new skill, and gaining different experiences… all of these things can help reinforce your uniqueness and give you a sense of personhood apart from your headmates.
Below, we’ve included a few areas you might consider to help you get started! As you learn more and explore different things, you can take note of your new likes and dislikes somewhere, like on your blog or in your journal!
Hobbies
Try practicing a new hobby or learning a new skill! There are limitless options to choose from, so don’t hold yourself back and try anything that seems even remotely interesting! YouTube is a great resource for tutorials, whether you want to learn how to sing, knit, play video games competitively, paint, breakdance, bake, write stories, or anything else! As you go through life, if you see someone doing something that piques your interest, try to take some time to learn more about it! You can start small with one hobby and gain more over time. Hopefully this can allow you to express yourself and learn more about who you are as an individual!
Foods
Hobbies aside, you can try to create your own palate when it comes to foods you eat and enjoy. Don’t be afraid to try new things and expose yourself to a wide variety of cuisines! Be wary of your body’s dietary needs and restrictions as you try new foods - as all headmates share the same body, they may share allergies and food intolerances as well!
Fashion
Experiment with makeup, accessories, and the clothes you wear! Create a look book for yourself filled with fashionable items that inspire you. If possible, try to front or cofront at a thrift store to find some more affordable clothes that fit your own sense of style! Explore aesthetics that you’re drawn to, and don’t worry if something you like may be considered “weird” or “cringe.” It’s okay to lean into these aspects as you figure out who you are!
Music
There are countless genres of music out there, each with their own unique style and sound! Try and listen to a broad variety of music, and pay attention to what you like and dislike. As you explore, think about potentially creating a playlist for yourself, or cultivating a list of artists, songs, or genres that you enjoy. Don’t let your preconceived ideas about certain genres keep you from trying them out - listen to everything with an open mind and see what stands out to you!
Rinse and repeat with other things!
Try out all sorts of different things! Listen to podcasts and audiobooks! Watch cartoons, dramas, documentaries, and anime! Read all sorts of things like poetry, plays, novels, and nonfiction! Study subjects like psychology, philosophy, astronomy or engineering! Spend time volunteering with local organizations or join up with a grassroots organization! Question and experiment with your gender and sexuality! Learn more about otherkin, copinglink, otherheartedness, therianthropy, alterhumanity, and other nonhuman identities! Spend plenty of time in nature, explore different spiritual beliefs, try learning a new language, and try to expose yourself to a wide variety of new things in general! As you explore, it may surprise you what things stick and become an important part of your life!
We’re sorry this post got so long, but hopefully this can help give some headmates a sense of direction when it comes to how they can become more distinct and gain a sense of identity in their system. Feel free to reach out with your own ideas or things your system does to help each member find their own individuality!
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and have a wonderful day!

Advice; Where to Make Rules and About Pages
If you've read my advice post about the difference between about and rules pages and why they're both important, you may not be wondering the best way to make them. The good news is, there are plenty of options!
Tumblr
The simplest choice. In the past, people would make custom pages on their theme. However, since dash view has become popular (and you can't view custom pages via it, nor can you view them on mobile), most people simply post their about/rules page as a normal text post, and link to it in their pinned post. If you have a custom theme, make sure to link the pages in the navigation bar too!
Using a plain Tumblr post increases your page's readability, but reduces the amount of formatting you can do. If you make your pages elsewhere, you will be able to customise them a lot more.
Carrd
A free website maker. You can make a small site with a free account, and the prices are pretty reasonable if you need to make a bigger site. Carrd has a minimalist aesthetic, and it will also adjust what you make to fit a mobile browser (though this may break your formatting if you have designed something complicated).
Carrd is easy to use, but it is best used for simple designs. If you want to do something more complicated than a basic Carrd layout, you're going to spend a lot of time trying to make the formatting work. If you want multiple pages for your site, you're also going to spend a lot of time formatting as you can't clone pages, therefore have to recreate each one every time instead.
It uses markdown for formatting text. If you're familiar with it, this can speed up writing, but it may slow you down if you've never used it before.
One of the benefits of Carrd is that there are lots of free templates available within the rpc! Here are resources I found with a quick Google search, but there are plenty more out there if you look for them: [x] [x] [x]
Weebly
Another free website maker. You can make more for free here than you can on Carrd. Weebly sites should adapt to work on a mobile browser.
I've never seen anybody use Weebly for about/rules pages, but I do recommend it! It's very easy to use, and, unlike Carrd, you can copy and paste entire pages. This makes it ideal if you have lots of muses that you want to make individual about pages for.
It uses a more typical text editor than Carrd. Instead of markdown, it's more like Microsoft Word - where you highlight text and click buttons to add formatting. You also have HTML/CSS options.
Weebly does offer some free templates, but you're likely to want to edit them to suit your needs more. This is okay! It isn't difficult to do!
Google Docs
A popular, completely free option. As with Carrd, there are plenty of templates and resources within the rpc (here are three examples: [x] [x] [x]). These pages will be viewable on a mobile browser, but the theme may not translate well. Keep readability in mind if you use this option.
If you use this option, also make sure the link you share is viewer only and doesn't have editor permissions!
Other Options (WordPress, Self-Hosting, etc)
Don't feel you have to follow the crowd. If you like to use WordPress, use WordPress. You could also use Neocities, or any other website builder!
Personally, I already own a web domain because I have websites for other online activities, so I use about pages that I've coded from scratch and host them myself. For my rules page, I just use a Tumblr text post that's linked in my pinned post. In the past, I've used Carrd and Tumblr pages for about pages.
If you want to write your site using HTML, some free website hosters will allow you to do this (Neocities, for example). If you're interested in coding, I do recommend this! It allows you to have full customisability, and coding can be a really useful skill. However, one downside of this is it can make your pages hard to read on a mobile browser. It's up to you to decide how important this is.
If you're interested in learning HTML (as well as CSS, JavaScript, and other coding languages), this site is a great resource!

With the new post editor on tumblr being pushed harder and harder, and the increasing warnings that the legacy editor will go away soon, I was wondering if anyone actually knows like...why they are doing this.
Wordpress, which owns Tumblr, has the same unwieldy and crash-prone structure on its site, where each paragraph, image, media, or other element of a page or post is a “block” and you combine blocks to make the page. Because I produce a lot of original content and a significant portion of it is fairly complex (lots of text, text and photos interacting, links lists), I constantly run into the issue, with the new editor, of being unable to edit posts comprehensively because I have to move paragraphs one at a time (no selecting more than one block!) and if I select the start or end of a paragraph to edit, it either refuses to edit at all, or crashes. If a post is longer than about a page, the editor crashes regardless, consistently, and generally just after I’ve made significant edits that haven’t yet saved. (Sometimes it crashes because it tried to save.)
I suppose it’s possible that Wordpress just thinks we’re dumbfucks who can’t program html and is trying to make it “easier” but it’s not making like...anything easier. I can’t imagine it takes less processing power on the code end, either, or my posts wouldn’t crash, something they never do in the Legacy editor.
So like...what’s the benefit of this? Does anyone know? I presume there is one, I just can’t figure out how this new post structure (or the page structure on Wordpress, which causes me headaches every time I try to update my author site) is of any benefit to anyone, anywhere. Presumably this makes Tumblr and Wordpress more compatible but like, why the fuck are they doing it this way on Wordpress, either? Can someone explain it to me like I’m five, please. (I’m a pretty bright five but still.)

Kickstart Your Earnings with Content Writing: A Beginner’s Friendly Roadmap
If you’ve ever wondered how ordinary people turn their words into cash, content writing might be your sweet spot. You don’t need a fancy degree or decades of experience to get started. With some guidance, dedication, and a dash of creativity, you can start earning from content writing sooner than you think. This guide walks you through each step in a friendly, down‑to‑earth way so you’ll feel confident launching your freelance writing journey.

Why Content Writing Is a Great Starting Point Content writing covers everything from blog posts and web pages to social media captions and product descriptions. Businesses of all sizes need fresh, engaging words to connect with their audience, rank higher in search engines, and boost sales. As companies continue to invest in digital marketing, demand for quality content writers stays strong. Plus, you can work from anywhere, set your own hours, and choose projects that spark your interest.
Understanding the Basics of Earning from Content Writing At its core, earning from content writing means providing value through written words. Clients pay for:
Research that saves them time
SEO‑friendly copy that boosts visibility
Clear, engaging storytelling that connects with readers
Consistent output that maintains an active online presence
Your job is to become the go‑to person who delivers those benefits reliably.
Step 1: Identify Your Niche and Strengths While generalists can find work, specializing helps you stand out. Consider topics you enjoy or know well—travel, personal finance, health and wellness, tech, lifestyle, parenting, gaming, or education. Having a niche makes it easier to showcase your expertise and justify higher rates. If you’re a fitness buff who loves writing, focus on blogs and articles in that sphere. If you have a background in software, aim for tech how‑to guides.
Step 2: Build a Portfolio That Shows Your Skills Clients want proof you can write well. Even if you haven’t been paid yet, you can create sample pieces:
Start a personal blog or Medium page and publish 3 to 5 high‑quality articles in your niche.
Guest post on small blogs that accept submissions.
Rewrite or summarize existing news stories in your voice (clearly marked as samples).
Draft mock project pieces for imaginary clients—product descriptions, newsletters, or landing pages.
Organize these in a simple online portfolio. You can use free tools like Google Sites, Wix, or WordPress. Make sure each sample highlights your SEO skills by including relevant keywords naturally in titles and subheadings.
Step 3: Optimize Your Online Profiles for Visibility Next, set up profiles on freelance platforms and job boards. Popular destinations include Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, ProBlogger, Contena, and LinkedIn. When crafting your profile:
Write an engaging headline that includes “content writer” or “freelance writer.”
Summarize your background, niche focus, and any standout achievements.
List your portfolio samples or link directly to your site.
Add relevant skills: SEO, WordPress, SEMrush, Mailchimp, social media management, etc.
Request testimonials from friends or colleagues who can vouch for your work ethic or writing ability.
A well‑optimized profile boosts your chances of appearing in client searches and winning invitations.
Step 4: Find Your First Paid Gigs Landing that first paid project often takes persistence. Strategies that work:
Pitch directly to small businesses or local startups. Send personalized emails offering a free trial article or website audit.
Apply to relevant listings daily on freelance boards. Tailor each proposal to the client’s needs—mention specifics from their job post.
Explore niche‑specific boards like BloggingPro or JournalismJobs for targeted opportunities.
Network on LinkedIn by sharing helpful writing tips, engaging with posts in your niche, and connecting with marketing professionals.
Early on, you might accept lower‑priced gigs to build credibility, but avoid underpricing yourself. Aim for a rate you can increase once you’ve racked up 5 to 10 positive reviews.
Step 5: Master SEO and Content Strategy SEO savvy writers command better fees. Search Engine Optimization involves understanding how keywords, user intent, and readability affect rankings. To shine:
Use free keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to identify target phrases.
Incorporate primary keywords in titles, opening paragraphs, subheadings, and naturally throughout the text.
Keep sentences concise, break up text with subheadings, and add bullet lists or numbered steps for scannability.
Learn basic on‑page SEO: meta descriptions, internal linking, image alt text, and proper URL structure.
Businesses pay for measurable results. If your copy ranks higher and drives traffic, you become more valuable.
Step 6: Set Competitive Rates and Payment Terms Knowing how much to charge can feel tricky. Common approaches include:
Per‑word rate: New freelance writers often start at five to ten cents per word, moving up to twenty cents or more with experience.
Per‑hour rate: Beginners might charge twenty to thirty dollars per hour, progressing to fifty and beyond as skills sharpen.
Per‑project fee: Flat rates for complete blog posts or web pages, factoring in research, revisions, and strategy.
Always agree on payment milestones. A 50/50 split works—half up front, half on completion. Use contracts to outline deliverables, deadlines, and revision policies. This keeps both sides on the same page.
Step 7: Deliver Quality and Build Long‑Term Relationships Repeat clients are freelancing gold. To keep clients coming back:
Meet deadlines without reminders.
Communicate clearly—let them know if you hit a roadblock and propose solutions.
Offer a revision round to refine the piece to their liking.
Suggest topic ideas for future posts based on emerging trends in their industry.
When clients see you consistently add value, they’ll hire you again and refer you to others.
Step 8: Leverage Tools and Continuous Learning Stay competitive by embracing helpful platforms:
Grammarly or ProWritingAid to polish grammar and tone.
Yoast or Rank Math (for WordPress) to fine‑tune on‑page SEO.
Trello or Asana for managing multiple projects smoothly.
Google Analytics basics to understand content performance.
Invest time in online courses or webinars on SEO, storytelling, and copywriting. The more you learn, the more you can charge.
Step 9: Scale Your Earnings Over Time Once you’ve established a steady stream of projects, scaling becomes the name of the game. Options include:
Raising your rates for new clients while maintaining current engagements.
Packaging content services—offer blog writing plus email newsletters or social media management as a bundle.
Outsourcing parts of the work, like research or editing, to junior writers, allowing you to focus on strategy and client relations.
Creating digital products, such as eBooks or courses on content writing, to earn passive income.
Diversifying revenue streams helps insulate your income from slow periods.
Putting It All Together Earning from content writing is an achievable goal, even if you’re starting from scratch. By identifying your niche, building an impressive portfolio, mastering SEO, and delivering top‑notch work, you’ll attract clients eager to pay for your expertise. Remember that patience and persistence pay off. Treat every project as a chance to improve your craft and delight a client. Before you know it, you’ll have a thriving freelance writing business that fits your lifestyle and fuels your creative passions.

"Lore, where have you been?"
In hell, probably. I remade M0R1BUND.com.
“For the love of god, why?”
Short answer: to save time and money.
Long answer: Sharing art was getting burdensome. Neocities hosts static websites built with html, css, and javascript—which is awesome for its mission, to encourage people to create future-proof websites. But this also means that every page is created and maintained by hand. I handle every little link and file and bit of code, and if I want to do site-wide changes, I have to push those by hand, too. This takes time, and so does writing image descriptions and cross-posting art to other websites. It became normal for sharing art to eat up an entire day.
I later created Basedt.net in WordPress, so that I didn’t have to worry about managing link hierarchies, which was a big timewaster on my old webcomic. I liked working in WordPress well enough, and I knew I would benefit from being able to use PHP to manage the sheer amount of stuff that’s on M0R1BUND.com. I was also paying double for webhosting through two different services, when I really didn’t need to…. So… I knew it was inevitable that I would consolidate the two at some point. It was time.
I do really love Neocities and I’m sorry to let it go. I encourage anyone who wants to learn web design and create their own website to start there.
Anyway, that’s how I ended up in hell for 6 months.
“What’s changed?”
Most things. I’m most excited about the quality-of-life stuff, like being able to sort art by character/location/world, or being able to move between individual pieces instead of having to return to the gallery landing page. There are lots of things I want to add, but my soft deadline for this was the new year, so I focused on recreating M0R1BUND.com as it existed before… well… this.
I’ve also edited most of my writing. This site is old, and the art is even older, it felt good to give it some TLC.
There are still a few things missing from the new site:
The Woods and RANSOM. They aren’t really representative of Basedt or Mercasor anymore, and I was not a competent writer in 2018. If I re-share them, it will be in the distant future.
Some of my Those Who Went Missing stuff. I haven’t been playing TWWM publicly, so this is lower priority right now. It will happen when it happens.
Some twines. They haven’t adjusted to the new filepath format yet. Killswitch is here, though :)
If you need them urgently for some reason, I can share them with you? but that seems doubtful haha.
Links to pages on the old M0R1BUND.com are broken and will remain broken until I set up redirections to the new M0R1BUND.com. I have no idea how long that will take! … Hopefully not long, given the new semester is here.
And of course... If you see anything weird, tell me! I test as much as I can, but I only have access to so many devices. Break this website within an inch of its miserable life so that I can fix it.
“How’s Basedt going?”

It’s going. Recreating my website took precedence for the above reasons, but I’ve been working concurrently on it in my spare time. We move like a glacier into the new year. ETA: ???

Hi! I'm sorry if this isn't a super helpful message. But I am literally also trying to help a relative in Chicago navigate getting a home aide right now. (from a distance, I am on the east ghost.) Howtogeton dot wordpress dot com has some great info I've been looking at. And also we filled out tinyurl dot com / findingcarechicago and they sent us the list of like thirteen covid-safe care providers in their network. Our issue is right now this is just out of pocket for us. Idk if you could tell me any more about how you got approved for the medicaid payments, if not I understand and good luck with your search!!
EDIT: That list you sent me is awesome tysm i will have to see if any of those people can mesh with the medicaid PA system since i don't completely understand how works yet. 🥳
hello. thank you for links. is your relative already approved for medicaid? like are they under the income limits? because that is the first required thing. you need to be on medicaid as your insurance to get the state provided home care. if your income is too high for regular medicaid i believe you can get medicaid ABD (aged blind disabled) if you prove disability which is a whole other rigmarole that i haven't done. not sure if same as SSI or not. so it's unfortunately easiest to just have very low income (under ~$20k/yr for 1 person).
This is where you apply for benefits in general: https://abe.illinois.gov/access/
Then this is where you apply for home care: https://wr.dhs.illinois.gov/wrpublic/wr/dynamic/referral.jsf
^And check off "I would like help living independently at home".
Then they will contact you via email/phone. It will be very frustrating and weird. often even if you specify support person they will contact the person who needs services themself, and often if you specify not phone they will call anyway. Also they will send complicated paperwork to provided address. I had to ask doctors and social workers for help filling out and everyone claimed was not their job. I still have not been assigned an actual case manager. if you get medicaid home care they will assign you a care coordinator but she is only supposed to meet with you every 3 mos.
i don't know how they decided how many hours i got or anything. i don't have access to like what they filled out about me or their analysis of my functioning. i am only approved for "homemaker" services and they sent me a random person from an agency. if you can find your own person it's called a "personal assistant" and i think you get to manage the care more independently, which is part of why i'm looking for new aide. but my current aide is from agency and has to follow some rules that i don't really understand.
